As early as December 20, 1619, the six-year-old Polish Prince Karl Ferdinand (son of Sigismund III) was appointed Coadjutor of the Diocese of Breslau. This occurred primarily through Habsburg influence, aimed at forging a Polish alliance against the Silesian Estates, who, as the supreme Silesian overlords, constantly posed difficulties for the Habsburgs. In 1625, the succession of the Vasa prince as bishop was enforced against the resistance of the cathedral chapter. Throughout his reign, Charles Ferdinand rarely resided in Wrocław. The two coats of arms on the reverse of this quadruple Reichstaler are intended to emphasize the dual rule of the Vasa dynasty in Sweden and Poland.
