Caravaggio (1571-1610) was an Italian artist that is best known for his Baroque paintings and use of the chiaroscuro technique. Away from his artworks he lived a troubled life, whilst starting out in Rome he killed an individual in a brawl, forcing him to flee to Naples. Eventually he made his way to Malta in July 1607 escaping from these troubles, the Knights of Malta welcomed the foremost painter of Rome at the time and during his brief stay in Malta he painted such works as St Jerome writing and the Beheading of St John. The latter is the only signed artwork of the artist and is considered his masterpiece. Both these paintings are still on display at St. John’s Co Cathedral in Valletta, as they were originally intended to be. Eventually, Caravaggio encountered troubles in Malta aswell and escaped the islands and imprisonment in October 1608.
