Coinage in Sorgues began with Count Raymond V (1148-1194) and continued under Raymond VI (1194-1222) and Raymond VII (1222-1249). The counts' mint therefore operated between 1148 and 1249. It was only around 1300 that certain Popes returned to this building, notably Boniface VIII and Clement V. It was definitively transferred in 1354 from Sorgues to Avignon after its purchase by Clement VI in 1348. The mint was mainly used to melt the coins collected thanks to the bridge toll, to transform them into coins bearing the coats of arms of the Counts of Toulouse, then the pontifical ones.
