(en) It was around the time of a significant recoinage that Edward I (1272-1307) set up the minting of coin of the realm within the secure walls of the Tower of London. The Tower mint, London continued to be the primary centre of production for the nation's coinage for more than 500 years but by the early 18th century, the building was showing signs of age and dilapidation. Also, since the development of mechanised minting processes in the 17th century, the amount of space needed to house this growing institution was impacting on the Tower's other operations. Following the outbreak of war at the beginning of the 19th century, the decision was made to relocate the Royal Mint to a new premises on nearby Tower Hill, in an area of industrial warehouses.
