I'll stop using tokens as "countries" when, and only when, I have a 10th spot that won't be cluttered with at least 3-4 countries if I do so. As it stands, without Canadian tokens I'd have 3 countries tying for the 10th spot, and I just hate that kind of nonsense.

I do mine by types just because of Mexico. I have a total of 2610 registered coin for it, most of them different years from same coins, and the biggest part for the swap list, so doing it by total would leave Mexico way up ahead of the rest of my countries, so I prefer doing it by types and thus having a healthier top 10.

To you guys, which is the easiest Country/Territory to have a complete coin type set? I mean, a country maybe with few coin types and all currency and common ones, or a country with a little more coin types but cheap and easy to find.

I ask this because there are some countries that for an amateur, and even a professional collector are impossible to complete even by types only, example of this Mexico, as it has over 1000 types to date, one third are gold coins or bi-metal coins with gold in them, so that is quite expensive (up to 1kg gold "coins"). Then, the remaining 2/3rds nearly 5/9ths are pure or partially silver, many of them not so expensive, but a lot of colonial and proof expensive ones. And that leaves only a 1/9th of common types of cheap currency to be collected.

I honestly think Canada is one... there is a fair bit of silver in the common circulation pre-1968, but some of it is relatively cheap (especially the dimes), and the only gold coin that was ever circulated was the sovereign. It's only been a country since 1867, so it isn't going to have a ridiculously long history like China, Greece, or England (to name but a few examples). The common currency is easy enough to find, and most of the special coins have been put out into circulation (although starting maybe 4-5 years ago we joined the craze for "collectibles", but those aren't circulated). I find Canada fun, also, not just because it's my own country, but because there ARE so many sets to be collected that went into circulation. Right now I'm trying to complete my circulated Olympic coin set and I've made a lot of progress so far. :)

The thing of it is, too, that you're not going to find a country that didn't use silver at some point, and even countries that are not rich now used silver back in at least the 1930s or before.

It also occurs to me that perhaps you can make your own thread to ask everyone this question, because technically this is very off-topic.
A six year Numista absence makes the heart grow fonder... ?
Mexico used silver currency until 1995, that is why it has some of the more affordable silver circulation coins in the World. And main reason why my "life goal as a collector" is to complete the Peso collection, as this period only lasted 129 years and it only includes less than 10 real-circulation gold coins. So it seems quite reachable. Specially considering I already have nearly 85% of the type collection. Although there are some gold commemorative near the end that are quite expensive, but if I manage to complete the rest of the coins then I could focus on those and buy 1 or 2 per year only.

The New Peso is a completely different story, few currency coins Vs a huge number of Proof Silver and Gold comms. Just check Mexico's coin list and you'll know what i mean.

Canada as you mention seems quite affordable to try completing a collection, but lately they have gone hype with yearly comms. It is like a coin-splosion over there.

X-D  Just won several auctions I was bidding on. Will update my top ten once the items arrive. Still, I lost 5 others, but seems someone was trying to complete a series and the bidding got too high, WAY above direct buy prices, or there was some dirty playing there with some bidder working for the seller, because otherwise I would have gotten all the items at 50% retail value  :~

Small changes, either from swaps or, in the case of the UK/USSR, being given coins that my grandmother had saved in a lovely little coin purse from Scotland. (She came to Canada as a war bride after WWII.) Coins that she gave me, or that she used to own, mean the world to me, and they are never going anywhere other than my own hands.

Ha... I've actually traded some of my American stuff away. I don't tend to like American coins o.o. The USSR coins were mostly a gift, and I already had a bunch of Cuban coins right at the beginning of this, but I did deliberately buy the NK coins because they were pictures of animals and transportation and they were just beautiful. Also, as written above, I seem to be fascinated by communist countries.  :O

Monaco in your Top 10! Very interesting :)

Makes me think about other tiny countries... would the area of all coins made for the Vatican City be larger than the actual Vatican City?
Don't have a top 10 just 4, UK, Canada (1 cents only), USA (1 cents or lower only) & Australia Penny & 1/2 Penny
No major changes in my Top10 except for and increase in types from Mexico

From 229 at the beginning of the month to 258 this week... and surely 262 next one once some cents arrive.

And Russia increased to 45 types, once a swap arrives that is.

Hi, I'm new here.
How is possible to have more more coins than catalog?

It isn't possible to have more coins than registrated on the catalogue, but it is possible to have multiple coins of a coin type. And as a result of that you can have like 500 coins from the Netherlands while there are just 133 coins registrated. So the catalogue counts coins by type and 'your collection' counts them by the number of boxes you have ticked.

USA and German tallies (and older France) are helped by the multiple mintmarks.  Belgium is effectively being collected twice, once for each language.  If I only collected by type and date, France would overtake USA, and Germany and Belgium would not be in the top 10 (to be replaced by Italy and the Philippines).
Here is my Top Ten if I exclude mintmarks and varieties:

Italy just missed the cut at 174.
mrfane i collect by year and mint so its total number for coins. i should look at total types i have. Its just the way you collect.
It is, what it is, or is it.
I collect only types and commemoratives. Also no variants and for Belgium only one language per type. I like the monetary history the most hence the choices I made here.

So I do have both a silver Washington Quarter and a cupro-nickel one, but no state quarters. This way I only have 22 types of US coins.

You shouldn't feel bad about the size of your collection. When I started, I had like 300 coins and now I have almost 6000! To be fairly honest, I enjoyed having just 300 coins instead of having 6000! I collect coins by date/type and that way you easily get over 6000. I'm even thinking about selling all dublicates and just stay at collecting types... But that's just me. I know a few collectors who even reach the 10,000 border (!) and still love to add up!

mrfane  mind was small to and now iam taking over a room just for coins. If you can make up your mind on watch one you want to collect Type or everything.. Iam still making up my mind. I love them all.And now when i get around 80 to 100 coins it gets it own note book. i havearound 55 note books some have all the countrys that starts with a letter. When a country gets to big i take out and put in its own note book. some countrys have two note books.Just have fun and you will learn so much from everyone. And there is no wrong way to collect. If you like it its right for you.

It is, what it is, or is it.
Guys,
I collect coins by KM# only. (One of each) It is surprising how quick your collection can grow. Although I have been collectiig for a very long time, the interest has never wained, and I am always looking out for the next coin fair or coin exchange with other collectors.
At this time I have almost 13,300 different coins listed on my database, all with different KM#'s from 304 different countries or other issuing authorities.
My top ten.
Russia 528
Isle of Man 499
Poland 467
Ukraine 347
Gibraltar 298
Portugal 286
Canada 270
India 242
U.S.A. 234
San Marino 218
A very close 11th Vatican City 217

If I had not split Germany into three separate collections (Pre 1936, 1936-1948 and post 1948) it would enter at number 5 with a total of 302

Whoa, that's a huge collection, and an impressive number of countries.

Just had the UK tick up to 84 different types, surpassing Brazil. Ignoring commemoratives and variants makes it harder to reach 100 for a single country. The country must have been around for a longer period of time and have suffered from chronic inflation and frequent changes in heads of state to ensure a large amount of different types of ordinary circulation coins. Brazil is probably the most suitable candidate for this.
Jokinen,
I did not add my GB collection into my list as I do collect them by date. I have never counted them but I guess it would be over 1,000. I may have to get around to doing that little project. I know my oldest is a 1648 shilling.
I am now trying to obtain all of the 2014 issues, which is becoming difficult as some of them do not seem to be in circulation yet. I have the 1 penny, 2 pence, 5 pence and 10 pence, but that's it.

Just receive another 20 coins from a collector in Luxembourg.

Geoff

I collect only one per KM number and only after 1964 (guess why). Try to collect only "circulating" coins. Only country I have collected a bit by date is Norway (guess again). This is only coins which is registred here in Numista.

Norway 397
Poland 291
San Marino 272
USA 261
Germany 1871-1948 250 (should be far higher since I have notgeld from more than 500 different locations)
Vatican 239
UK 189 (not including Channel Islands)
Russia 181
Canada 164
South Africa 151

Currently negotiating some important swaps that should boost up Spain, and push Russia even higher.

How did that happen? I mean, did they slide through an opening in the box, or what?

Ilya.

Isle of Man 499!? Also Gibraltar 298!? And you say it is by KM. You should improve the Numista catalog with your collection as there are less types registered than those in your collection.

I would only add the coins if I could find the KM# as this is the most useful piece of information for collectors. Within my collection, I have over 600 coins that do not appear in any Krause catalogue. Some date back to the early 1990's. I check the new Krause catalogue each year, so I do up-date when possible as the KM numbers form part of my database

Try searching at NGC Site, they share info with K&M (Numismasters) but have a lager catalog. I found most of Mexico's missing coins on Numista there, specially those under the MB# nomenclature, as most of the pre-1600 coins where moved from KM to MB. But also several missing gaps in the K&M 2014 North America book, which is supposed to be the most comprehensive book for Mexico, but for some reason they often remove coins that appeared on previous editions or don't add the newest ones for several years. I think they only add them once the coin reaches an NGC Certification facility, and since there is none in Mexico they only reach them from US citizens who import them.

Yes that does seem odd because I haven't removed any coins from my collection so I think it might be something to do with what Numista includes under UK (might have previously included Isle of Man & Lundy but now doesn't?)

My numbers are always bouncing around by a couple.  I think mods get into edit wars as to if a particular coin goes under tokens, or a country.  Or if a coin is from a 'country' or a 'Country.'  Some days I loose countries, (a good example was when Hutt River went from country status to token status several dozen times in the course of a week).
