Bjarne Ahlström

Bjarne Ahlström

Bjarne Ahlström (1938–2017) was a prominent Swedish numismatist and coin dealer who significantly influenced the Scandinavian numismatic community. In the early 1950s, his brother, Bernth Ahlström, founded B. Ahlström Mynthandel, which Bjarne took over in the early 1960s. Under his leadership, the firm became Sweden's leading coin dealership and auction house, organizing over 70 auctions and producing around 50 catalogs during the latter half of the 20th century.

Ahlström was also a publisher of numismatic literature. Notably, he co-authored "Sveriges Mynt 1521–1977" (The Coins of Sweden 1521–1977) with Bengt Hemmingsson and Yngve Almer, published in 1976. This work, renowned for its high-quality images and scholarly depth combined with valuations, quickly became the leading reference for Swedish coins and remains a primary resource for auctioneers, dealers, collectors, and researchers.

Beyond his business and publishing endeavors, Ahlström played a crucial role in establishing the Gunnar Ekström Foundation for Numismatics, serving as a lifetime board member.
