Jay M. Galst (1950–2020) was a distinguished American ophthalmologist and numismatist, renowned for his expertise in coins related to ophthalmology and the Holy Land.
He practiced ophthalmology in New York City for several decades, serving as a clinical professor at New York Medical College and a senior attending surgeon at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.
Galst's numismatic passion led him to assemble significant collections, particularly focusing on ancient and medieval coins from the Holy Land, as well as coins and medals associated with the human eye and vision. His scholarly contributions include co-authoring "Ophthalmologia, Optica et Visio in Nummis" (2013) with Peter van Alfen, a comprehensive catalog of numismatic items related to ophthalmology.
Throughout his career, Galst was actively involved in various numismatic organizations. He served as president of the New York Numismatic Club (1988–1989), chairman of its board (2001–2020), and president of the Bronx Coin Club (1998–2006). He was also a life fellow of the American Numismatic Society and a fellow of the Royal Numismatic Society.
