John M. Mercanti (born 1943) is an American sculptor and engraver renowned for his extensive contributions to U.S. coinage. He served as the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, a position he held from 2006 until his retirement in 2010. Throughout his tenure at the Mint, which began in 1974, Mercanti designed and engraved more than 100 coins and medals, making him one of the most prolific artists in the institution's history.
Among Mercanti's most notable works is the reverse design of the American Silver Eagle, introduced in 1986, which has become one of the most iconic images in modern numismatics. In addition to his work on U.S. coinage, Mercanti has collaborated with international mints, such as the Perth Mint in Australia, where he designed the reverse of the Australian Wedge-tailed Eagle series. His post-retirement endeavors also include signing exclusive agreements with numismatic certification companies, adding a personal touch to graded coins bearing his designs.
