Karsten Dahmen

Dr. Karsten Dahmen (born 1969) is a distinguished German numismatist and classical archaeologist, currently serving as the Deputy Director of the Münzkabinett at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. His curatorial responsibilities encompass coins from the Late Antique, Gallic Empire, and Byzantine periods, as well as Oriental and Islamic coins and non-German foreign medals.

Dr. Dahmen's academic journey includes a Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, during which he conducted research at the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Roland R. R. Smith.

Among his notable publications is "The Legend of Alexander the Great on Greek and Roman Coins," where he examines the portrayal of Alexander from 320 BC to AD 400, analyzing not only Alexander's own coinage and the posthumous coinages of his successors but also the reuse of his image by rulers from the Greek world and the Roman Empire into late antiquity.

In addition to his curatorial duties, Dr. Dahmen is involved in the development and editorial work for the Münzkabinett's online catalogue and directs the Münzkabinett's Authoritative Data Portal. He also coordinates digital initiatives and Linked Open Data projects for partner institutions and the NUMiD network.
