Romain Probst

Romain Probst (1938–2023) was a key figure in Luxembourg numismatics, widely recognized for his expertise in the coinage of Luxembourg and the Treveri region. After initially operating a kiosk near the railway station, he transitioned to numismatics and founded the firm Lux-Numis. Probst is best known for publishing the Prifix catalog, an illustrated guide to Luxembourgish coins since 1026, which remains a vital reference for collectors and researchers.

In addition to the Prifix catalog, Probst authored the Catalogue illustré des monnaies trévires, focusing on the coinage of the Treveri, an ancient Celtic tribe from the region. This publication cemented his reputation as an authority in regional numismatics and contributed significantly to the understanding of ancient coinage in the area.

Probst was also an active member of the numismatic community, serving as chairman of the Cercle Numismatique du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg for many years. His multilingual skills in German and French helped foster international collaboration in the field. His passing in April 2023 marked the loss of a respected and beloved figure in numismatics.
