Ulrich Klein

Ulrich Klein (born 1942, in Stuttgart) is a renowned German numismatist and classical philologist. After working as a classical philologist at the University of Tübingen, he became the numismatist and head of the Münzkabinett at the Württemberg State Museum in Stuttgart, serving from 1981 to 2007. During this time, he represented Baden-Württemberg in the Numismatic Commission of the Federal Republic of Germany and chaired the Württemberg Association for Numismatics from 1981 to 2012.

Klein has authored several seminal works on the coinage and monetary history of the Swabian region. His notable publications include Die Württembergischen Münzen von 1798–1873 (1991), co-authored with Albert Raff, a comprehensive catalog of coin types, variants, and patterns from that period. His contributions to the field earned him prestigious awards, such as the Otto-Paul-Wenger Prize from the Association of Swiss Professional Numismatists in 1990 and the Honorary Prize of the Society for International Monetary History in 1993.

In 2007, to commemorate his retirement and 65th birthday, the Württemberg State Museum commissioned a medal designed by Peter Götz Güttler. In 2017, the German Numismatic Society awarded him the Eligius Prize, further recognizing his significant impact on numismatics in Germany and beyond.
