I have gotten a lot of mine on eBay but there ain't any room for haggling ha ! I have seen that private collectors who sell their collections online seem to ask lower prices too which is better lol
eBay junkie too.

I get a lot from the local fleamarkets, we have three of the largest in State within a 20 minute drive. There are a lot of coin dealers but also people selling old collections, or even a few coins they picked up over the years.

There are a lot of coin dealers but most are just bullion hustlers although there is one right at the end of my street who sells world coins. There is also a crazy old Italian guy with a pawnshop who sells cheap banknotes and a few coins. I don't really collect banknotes and those who do are going to hate me for this but.... I'm buying lots of vintage European notes with the beautiful cobalt and red colours and when I get enough I'm going to seal them in a clear resin and have a unique kitchen floor.

I get coins from Listia too. I just got a really nice 1900 Canadian Cent which looks to be in EF condition for the equivalent of 65 cents including shipping. You use credits instead of cash. If anyone wishes to join use the link on my Numista profile and you will be given 500 free credits.

Amazon list coins too but they are overpriced. Same with Yardseller which used to be great, you used to get a whole bunch of free credits so even though the coins are double eBay prices the free credits meant silver dimes for a little over $1 or quarters for about $4. That boat has sailed though, you now have to pay a buyers fee of at least $2.50.

Other than that try coin clubs. We have one locally which has auctions and coin swap evenings although I still haven't got around to joining. Coin shows too, they used to have one at the Guildhall in Newcastle.
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

Hello,

pnightingale, you live in Florida. I find that Florida has great coin stores all over the state. I vacation in Florida usually once a year. I can give you some addresses if you wish. I don't have nearly as many coins as you - maybe that's why I think they are better.

Regards
1. coin shows - mostly local, but I have travelled to a couple of major ones
2. Ebay - obvious
3. MA-shops - try it if you haven't. Really good selection of foreign coins
4. Local coin shops

I put an add on craigslist, but only ever got one good deal, the people on there are all idiots.
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Looking for pre 1783 coins

google it: MA-shops coins.
Yep, I should have just done that instead of asking.

Ok, so you get coins from Ebay and MA shop, do you get deals there?

No.  MA shops is a European outfit. Some of the best selection of coins I know of, but not cheap.

Like most others, I do most of my buying from eBay and when I'm not buying I'm usually watching to see what's out there and what they are selling for. It can be very time-consuming but also very satisfying to do your research on a particular coin and when one does come up for auction, to then carefully watch it and know what limit to put on your bidding. And then of course, there's the final 'coup-de-grace' when you place you maximum bid with maybe 5 seconds to run and wait for the screen to refresh to see whether you have won or not!

Apart from eBay, I have been to one coin show in London, where I did enjoy picking up a few bargains from the rummage trays, and I was recently in Istanbul where I picked up this little lot:

Now I have to be honest and admit that I didn't get a particularly good deal on these coins (well, this isn't the "best bargain find" topic, is it?) In fact, if truth be told, I got a bit carried away and paid over the odds for them, which is most unlike me. There was just something almost spritual about being in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, the largest covered market in the world, and looking at these coins that had originally been minted right there in that very city (when it was known as Constantinople), between 100 and 180 years previously. Istanbul is a pretty magical city and when you approach it from the Sea of Marmara and see the fantastic architecture with all the towers and minarets, you almost get transported back through time and imagine all the different peoples that have made the same journey and seen the same sights as you over hundreds and hundreds of years. Suffice to say, I think we will be going back there and spending some more time exploring and experiencing all the history and culture that Istanbul has to offer.

Of the coins above, I think my favorite has got to be this one:

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces29945.html

When I was looking through the coins that the shop keeper had to offer, I didn't really pay much attention to it, mainly because my eye was drawn to the Nickel and Silver pieces that were laid out in front of me. In fact, I almost didn't take it, but in the end when I was deciding what to take and what to leave, I thought that it would only be relatively cheap because at the time I thought it might have been Copper, so I went ahead and added it to the pile. It was only when I got it home and carried out some light 'conservation' on it with mild hand soap and water that I noticed the colours coming through as the dirt and grime began to fall away. Then of course once I saw the dates and looked it up here then I started getting a bit more excited about it. OK, it's not the best grade that it could have been, but it's still looking pretty good for a coin that's circulated for almost 180 years and it's better looking than the images that I had found on here and World Coin Gallery.

Rick thanks for sharing...love the way you store your coins..Turkey is now on my bucket list! I spend a lot of time on eBay also for the same reasons you do. Recently I've started using an automatic bidder so I can set a limit and don't get caught up in the auction and overbid
Thanks for your kind remarks, @josephjk, and I know what you mean about getting caught up in the auction, especially if the coin is a particularly good grade. It can take a lot of discipline and self-control not to get carried away :O

Freaking Great, now I will be wanting to go to Istanbul, for the next couple of months I will be thinking about traveling. That's the problem with travel, you just want to keep going, and see everything.
Great story Rick.

I need to try the market near my town, here they call them flea markets, I don't know why. I have never been, its mostly all junk and stolen stuff, but I have always wanted to go looking for a lot of world coins.

I buy coins from lots of different places. As others: eBaY. Antique shops, I frequent to try not to miss out on deals. Boot Fairs, a good place for good finds but sometimes people want far too much for their coins. Indoor markets; my local one has just this week got more than 3 coin dealers! It was brilliant; I managed to get a 25 cents British Honduras, 25 cents Belize, British West Africa Shilling, and 10 centesimi 1924 for £1. Crossed of British Honduras anyway. I recently called up another collector and bought some coins from him. I did spend a fair amount of money BUT silver coins were included in the deal and because I was getting Swiss coins...some of which were duplicates, I didn't think about them being currency! 54 Swiss Francs after saving some for my collection = that is around 22 GBP I think!
Sheesh and you didn't consider me ! *huffs*
Rick, even if you did slightly over pay... what a great way to remember your visit to one of the world's great cities. Much better than the usual tacky souveneirs.

I have a plastic model of the Blue Mosque. The top comes off and you can keep fags in it. Should have bought coins.

Don't worry Kenny, the British types call smokes, fags (bundle of sticks that you light on fire)

do u have any coins of notes from Honduras.. if so let me know at nmunguian@hotmail.com
thanks
I still get most of mine on eBay... though I've discovered that my local store, for Newfoundland or Canadian valuable pieces, is almost always going to be a better bargain than eBay. They also have world coins in a bin for 3/$1.00, which still amazes me considering how much you pay for this stuff on eBay, but of course they are missing a lot of countries I'm trying to collect, etc.

But even things like the oldest small Canadian cents go for WAY more on eBay than my coin guy would sell them to me ($1 per coin). So I think I'm gonna be doing a lot more local buying in the future, especially when it comes to Newfoundland coins, and Canadian silver/old coins.
A six year Numista absence makes the heart grow fonder... ?
