Hi all,
I have a coin in my possession that has Queen Wilhelmina on it. It clearly says: 'Wilhelmina kongin der Nederlanden'. I looked it up here, and it says all Dutch coins from the 1850s should not have Wilhelmina on them. But it clearly says 1859 on the date ! Also, the writing on the reverse (no monarch) is not clear. I can only make out; (clockwise) m nt van het koni ryk der neder 1859. Made of silver, and is 5 cm wide.
Please tell if I have an error or something.
I understand the grade of your coin is low. You might be misreading 'Wilhelmina kongin der Nederlanden' instead of 'Willem III koning der Nederlanden'
The effigy should make a difference: Willem III is a bearded man looking to the right (on silver coins), Wilhemina is a charming young lady looking left (she became queen at the age of 10).
By the way, the largest silver coins of that period (2 1/2 guilders) are 38mm across, not 5cm. Sure about the size?
No.....it clearly says 1859 and it's definitely a woman with a tiara facing left. The name is very tarnished but the last letter is an A. It is a 1 guilder coin, I will upload a picture of it.

Sounds like a fake to me , no edge lettering , 5 cm and 1 gulden , and a date that is completely wrong
Last time I checked, you cannot view pages on FaceBook unless you have a FaceBook account. That might explain why the link to the photos didn't work. Please consider another image hosting service viewable by everyone, such as Flickr, Photobucket, or, ImageShack.

It's weird. As if someone muled a Willem III guilder reverse (sword privy mark matches with year 1859) with a Wilhelmina obverse. And in addition significantly increased the size (1G should measure only 28mm across). Overall lack of fine details seems to betray that it was not minted, but rather cast in a mould. It's certainly not a product of a professional mint.
The wear on the coin is strange. Most of the coin is sort of VF grade, but some individual letters are wiped out completely, while adjacent letters show hardly any wear at all.
Would be worth while to do a silver-test. I doubt it's silver.
Perhaps it's a master piece of a craftsman in training, who muled, resized and wiped out on purpose to avoid confusion with real money. But that's just my wild guess.
Wilhelmina was Queen of the Netherlands from 1890 to 1948.
So 1859 it's impossible.
I don't believe also 1959 at that time the Queen was Juliana.
