Dear all the collector fellow,
I would like to raise a familar issue among collector when we try to evaluate coins in exchange. For me, I swap on value basis so grading is one of key thing to determine the value of coin. Grading is also a controversial issue in swapping. I open this topic in order to have provide a good insight with contribution from experienced collector.
I use the first thing for all of your evaluation. How will you grade this coin

Honesty is the best policy
With almost all detail on the hair gone and much of the elevation of the map flattened, not to mention some of the discoloration and some foreign substance on the back of the head, I'd give if F+

I'd expect some VF answers and I wouldn't argue too much with it either.
Thank you for reply. This picture was given by my swap partner with a claim that the coin is UNC as it is from mint case.:° In my own grading, it is about VF+ or XF (for loose assesment).
Honesty is the best policy
I'd give it an xf. All details are there and even some lustre. The edge shows small burrs, which are usually worn off on vf.
But it does show traces of being handled.

yes, I agree. The coin is not original one.

He may have a mint case for that coin but that specific coin was not kept in a mint case as evidenced by all the flaws and wear. This could otherwise be a beautiful coin like the one in the Numista example but unfortunately is not. If I collected 1974 Italian 500 Lire, I would not want that example and would look for a better example. This one is VF and melt value at best.

I followed the link provided by harryg and at the bottom of the coinpage there is a link to numiscorner.com where they sell the same coin as MS60-62. That example is only slightly better than the one shown here, so I would say the coin from the OP is XF...
In my opinion discoloration or foreign material on a coin isn't a reason to subtract a grade.
A coin that still is in it's original package can have ugly black spots, but it's still Unc...
I would grade it as XF.
XF I think maybe VF +
This coin is UNC. Clearly It has been never circulated. The fact it was kept improperly is an other story.
I will grade that VF-low XF even though the coin has no signs of wear there is minor damage to the coin probably from storing it incorrectly. Firstly on the obverse there is some black foreign material between the I and the O in GVGLIELMO and between North Africa and Sicily there is a mark that runs across some of the coin. On the reverse it is slightly batter just a small dot on the back of the persons head.
Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.
If you send it to a grading company, in my opinion, they will grade it between AU55 and MS-63. Just search for such modern coins and you will be surprised.

I would personally grade it as XF-AU due to its improper storage in the past or bad packaging to begin with. But the coins was not circulating and it doesn't have traditional circulating wear on it that would reduce its grade.
Thank you. But I do not agree to you as following:
1. The surface of 500 Lira has been scratched with many times.
2. You can not compared between different coins. I only agree if you can give the same type of coin.
Honesty is the best policy
Proving once again why you should always insist on photos from your swap partner before agreeing to the swap.
IMO xf45. Drop due to scratches bad storage.
When in doubt DD and look / compare to graded examples which will give you a base to work from.
Grading is very subjective but no way coin f or VF IMO😃
Good luck. Be safe
Tovarich 👍👍
Am trying to get group to go after pcgs/ NGC for inconsistency grading standard.
Would like you to join us as a grader👍 then lots of us can claim BIG amount from 2 main grading companies.
