Howdy yall! I was wondering if there was a meaning behind these two coins. the 5 Lira of this series shows the Redemption of Mary of Bethany but do these have a biblical meaning? the 1 lira shows Jesus, i assume, and someone with a dragon or devil on them, and the 2 lira two combatants embracing each other in peace and the 50 lira shows a Giant or man surrounded in a Castle by animals at first i thought this was Daniel in the Lions den but the other animal is a crocodile . I was wondering if these is a biblical story or meaning attached to these or if they just picked these designs for other reasons. thanks!

My first thought on the 50 lire was it's a depiction of Adam and Eve and Garden of Eden.

The reverse descriptions and comment fields could need some of that information.
Sometimes the page of a coin or banknote lacks even a basic description which in this cases has confused some people. So there should be people on the lookout for pages with no description.
Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

There are so many confusing details on these coins which require elaborate explanations in order to make the suggested interpretations viable:
  • Christ (on the first coin) has his one feet on the globe while the other feet seems pierced.
  • The man drinks (?) from his own cupped hands while Christ holds his hands below, and the evil animal drinks (?) something from the man's back.
  • The evil animal (which resembles a sci-fi alien) has overall shape akin to angel's wings (the man with the animal looks like a single creature similar to an angel).
  • The postures of two combatants (on the second coin) are somewhat ambiguous. They aren't so close to each other as would be required for a hug (this could be thought as device to preclude an interpretation of their fleshly love). Maybe they are fighting after all?
  • The first combatant has a sword, a shield and a helmet, while the other has none of these items. (Suggesting an unequal stance.)
  • Either the walls (on the third coin) are only toy walls, or the man is a giant (as was correctly observed above). The gate is way too small for him to enter or to exit, and the walls are too low to protect him from the animals.
  • There are no buildings in the castle, just walls.
  • The man is somewhat chubby while the fingers of the hand above are unusually thin.
  • The big hand above has very broad sleeve while the man's shirt seems very tight.
  • I don't know what is the usual meaning of keeping only two of hand's fingers straight, but possibly this could be clarified using a catalogue of mudras. Due this finger position the big hand seems to tickle the man rather than to caress him.

i love these explanations lol
Allegory is always ripe pickings for satire.

I have a Franklin Mint USA Bicentennial set (1976) - some of the designs, picked by committees, representing this-and-that feature of the various states' points of pride, are just ludicrous.(8
These Vatican, also mention San Marino, coins of the 1960s-90s likewise feature some really far-out art that certain satirists might describe as pathetic.

My primary intention wasn't satire (although I am aware that it might seem so) but bringing to attention the complexities surrounding the task of interpretation. I find the intended subjects and artistic means perfectly legitimate, notwithstanding a novice like me finds many of them very confusing.

confusing, and amusing. ``-

Two referees and a sloppy catalogue. How is that even possbile? Why are they even referees if the simply don't care to do the research. Shameful.
