Is this magnetic?

Hello everyone!

This is an Italian 20 centsimi (1908-1935) coin,

N#1958

It is made of nickel,

But I don't know it is 100% nickel?

And can it be attracted by a magnet?

😃

Collect coins is my joy ~

Hi! Yes,the coin is made of nickel which is a nonmagnetic metal. And since it is not a precious metal, what importance has it to be 100% (or not) nickel?!

Nickel is paramagnetic and of course is the amount of nickel in an alloy important for its magnetic properties.

If it where a homogenous Cu-Ni alloy you would need at least 56 percent nickel before the alloy shows any magnetic properties at ordinary temperatures. A small pure nickel core (like 7% mass) can make a coin magnetic.

pure nickle is as magnetic as iron.

the effect deminishes as the alloy decreases so that 85 nickle 15 copper is completely non-magnetic

Ok,Idolenz, thanks for all your specialised info.! I am not an alloy specialist like it seems you are BUT when I said that the % of nickel content is of low importance,I ment AS A NUMISMATIC COIN,COLLECTABLE ITEM! You may agree that a 100%,90% or 80% nickel coin is the same for its collectable value! And,generally when a coin is named of nickel or copper, that is it is almost pure that metal made of. If not,it is marked as an alloy(Cu-Ni,bronze,brass etc.).

Thank you also,Mr.Midnight,it's always good to get new infos like yours BUT, I repeat, all these are not important for a numismatic item & its value like this!

Best wishes to you all!

from 65% and up of nickel, the alloy will be attracted to a magnet.

If in one and the same year you have (as in Italy) coins made of alloys, where some are not attracted to a magnet and others are not, then of course it can have a significant influence on the prices!

Look at the 20 centesimi 1939 from Italy

KM#75C (non-magnetic) in all grades is significantly more expensive  (around 20 times) than the KM#75D (magnetic).

Ok,you are right for that stainless steel coins but have you found examples to give me for nickel coins too(magnetic and nonmagnetic)?

Doesn't matter, it would always be the same, one of the two alloys in that year might be minted less, so the result would be the same! Find the examples yourself, if you don't believe me.

Sjoelund, the example you give states that both KM#75c and 75d are non-magnetic!

Nickel is considered ferromagnetic just like iron and cobalt and is highly attracted by a magnet.

I mean in pure form, not alloyed like in the typical Cu-Ni (75/25) form which is not magnetic at all…

He meant KM75b and KM75c:

😊Blimey, I did, sorry about that
