4 Pfenninge, but which exactly?

Hello,

I just got another coin that I am not able to completely identify on my own.

Like always, it is extremely corroded and barely identifiable, but I still tried to take photos as good as possible.

It is 25mm in Diameter.

I was able to identify it as 4 Pfenninge, most likely Prussia, but the date is not entirely visible.

I am not sure what the last number is, although I think that it is readable. I was not sure if it was a 3 or an 8

I tried to highlight some parts I could see in black (very poorly):

Front:

Back:

Though I am pretty certain that is is from Prussia, I was not able to see which of the two different crowns it was.

Thanks in advance

Looking at the crown and the 4 it's one of THOSE, unless you get the 4th number I guess you won't identify it much closer.

Agreed. Could very well be this one 1863 / 1868? My eyes say this is a pretty good match.

Thank you for your replies.

Looking at other examples of this coin I concluded that it is more likely to be an 8 than a 3.

I also measured it again and to my surprise it was again just barely 25mm, but thats most likely caused by the wear.
I will try to carefully clean the part with the year again in hopes of getting a better view of the third number.

Most likely a Prussian coin.

Just wondering. Are these coins really different except for the ruling authority? Do not see any difference (at least not on my phone).

Just call me Bram

No new swaps for the moment, still too many half-ongoing swaps to clean up!

Not really, just the king we could merge them and add the other king as this feature exists for a while now.

Hello,Wertinas! Please, don't put a blame on me if I kindly ask you ''What are you doing with such (bad) quality coins?! Do you think the work to identify them is worth, even a bit?!''

Friendly yours,

Andi

Hello Andi, dont worry, I understand your point.

Most of the coins I have on Numista are coins that I found with my metaldetector. For me, those coins are not about the value they have or how good they look (although I wouldnt mind good looking ones of course😄) but about the history they have. They were not handed down a few generations or stored somewhere by other collectors or for profits sake, they were lost when they were still in use. After about 150 years in the ground they of course can look quite rough.

It really makes you feel different about coins like this when you know that you are the first person to uncover and see them after a 100+ years. Therefore I try my best to find out from where they came and when they were used. With some coins it can also be of historic importance where they were found and what that can tell you about that time (not this one in particular, but you get my point)

Also I generally think that older coins should be treated with some respect as they most likely have been on the planet longer than yourself, often had some importance in peoples lives and should not just be put into the same category as other “collector items”

Hope that could answer your question,

Wertinas

I love and keep many an ugly coin, they are part of history and beautiful in their own right.

Dear friend Wertinas, thank you for your prompt and detailed reply! I also understand your point(s) of view, they are of ''archeological'' origins. For ex.,your statement about the posible importance of founding a coin in a place or another…

But for me(also ''inlove'' with history!) as a coin collector(not for some money/profit investment!) the coins' quality is also very important for its ''aesthetic'' aspect. If I could I should had in my collection only XF./Unc. coins! Not for their market value, please understand, but for their BEAUTY!!!

That's it,I like beautiful things… For me it is much better to ''count'' all the hair of a king instead of a mere silhouette…

Hi,harryg! Yes,I understand your point of view,it is the same as that of Wertinas's. Please also understand my point of view about the ''aesthetic'' look of a coin collection and what this brings to history also(you know better how a king looked like when he lived, from an Unc. coin)… If that should have been of very low importance, then all bad quality coins(let's say, very used!) would have high prices and Unc. coins, low prices… (exactly, the inverse way it is!).🤔
