Hello, can someone please help me to identify this coin? And I'd be interested in knowing if it's worth less than nothing. Thank you so much!

A Roman copper coin.

Aidan.

I think Constantinus, not sure though.

Coin starts with IMP. Weight and diameter would help. I can not find it here on numista, maybe on wildwinds. Back seems like a temple. Nice coin!

Possibly this one depending on size,  weight, and composition:

Harry got it!

Maxentius Follis IMP C MAXENTIVS PF AVG, Laureate head right. / CONSERV VRB SVAE, hexastyle temple with Roma seated front, looking left within, holding globe and sceptre. I can't read the mint mark but most likely Rome mint.

EDIT: Harry was faster 😂

Thank you so much all!! You guys are real pros. I'm not a collector, someone just gave me this years ago and I held onto it. May I ask if its condition would be considered poor or decent? Does it have any value? Thanks again!

Your coin is in very nice condition. Some context is in order here. Rome was very prolific at producing coins and many are newly discovered even today all over Europe and elsewhere. They are not as valuable as one might think simply because there are so many available. In the end It is worth what someone is willing to pay for it but nothing extravagant. Personally,  I would rather have the coin and a beautiful piece of history than a few tens of dollars or perhaps if you are lucky a hundred or so for it.

I have to disagree with Harry, in my opinion and experience handling these coin yours is in average condition. It's not bad but it's also not something I'd consider good or decent. Values of ancient coins are tricky since there's no price guide to go by and the same coin can sell on the same day on two different auction houses for completely different prices.

In my experience buying and selling such coins on the European market I'd value yours at around 20 to 30 USD. It might be worth more on the US market but I'm not familiar with prices there.

Perfect, thank you so much for your responses… so glad to finally know a bit more about this tiny piece of history :)

From my perspective here in the U.S, we don't see these as often as you do in Europe and to us it is a bit exotic, romantic, and novel. To an American, it is perceived as in very nice condition for a 2,000 or so year old coin so we probably value it more that Europeans do and the OP is located in the US as well.

Oh I completely agree, same goes for US coins in Europe. The condition is nice considering its age however these were minted in so large numbers that finding one in the same or better condition really isn't hard making it average.

As for the value I'm sure coin shops and US auction houses charge a larger premium on ancient coins than they would in Europe but they got a business to run. Collector to collector I think the price would be about the same and trying to sell it to a coin dealer even lower than what I wrote. Here's a much nicer example currently for sale on vcoins for 60 USD: https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/victors_imperial_coins/208/product/maxentius_conserv_vrb_svae_from_rome/1859819/Default.aspx

Still, it's a great piece of history, there's no doubt about that. And a great conversation starter, or maybe even a collection starter. 😉
