Numista is great site, I love it.

Then the price indication is not adequate.

For many swaps, I take the value indicated by Ucoins.

I understand that would be a huge step to move in this direction but when I see for example 50 cents Brunei 1967 with a ridiculous low price on Numista compared to the current market value, I say something wrong.

I don't trust those values shown by numista either. Even not at all.

Hello,

I understand you are referring to this coin: N#12110

Could you please clarify which coin you would expect?

We have a fair amount of data for this coin and I didn't notice anything significantly wrong.
For example, Numista indicates a value of €2.60 in grade VF. 14 members entered the coin in their collection with a value. From the comments, I understand several of them purchased the coin for around this value from local shops or local auctions. Only 3 members paid much more, around €7.

The Numista values reflect how much Numista members usually spent to acquire the coin. Coins sold individually in international shops would likely be priced with a higher value.

They were able to buy this coin under certain conditions (many coins in collections were found in circulation so bought at their face value) and at a certain time (maybe years ago) at the price they indicate on the Numista coin sheet,  but would they want to resell it at the price they bought it?
If all members set an exchange price for their duplicate coins (as is done on other sites) we would then have an average more representative of the market price.
In the example of the Brunei coin, the market price is at least double the price indicated on the Numista sheet.

This would mean:
- all coins in the exchange are valued F, VF, XF, UNC
- collectors have set an exchange price for all their duplicate coins.
So the price indicated on the Numista sheets would correspond to the average of the prices of the coins inswap lists.

This would allow for a more realistic market price, to be able to discuss calmly with a collector who overvalues his coins for swap.

in other words, I don't care what price you bought your coin, what I care about is how much you're asking for it.

But it was already a revolution to introduce a notion of coin cost on the Numista files, so I am not sure that moving further towards the mercantile side is a priority.

And by the way, that would be the leading edge, the best of all websites, cause other website propose an average price without taking in account its conservation status so it's an average that doesn't correspond to the actual price of each coin.
Each member proposes a price for his coin to swap depending of its conservation status, instead of the price he bought his coin.
Just a dream.

As you say, just a dream.

For everyone to grade their coins for trade, you just need to modify the form very slightly.

Personally, I try to “grade” every coin I have in my swaplist, but I also notice that I am a very difficult person in terms of quality and an XF in NGC/PCGS would say be a VF in my own grading system.

I like the idea of having some “value” shown in the swap list that's outside the comments section, I use the public comment section for variants or if some coin is reserved. I already price my personal collection (singles) for what I WOULD SELL THEM FOR, not WHAT I BOUGHT THEM FOR. Because I buy world coins per kilogram mostly and cross reference what I would sell my entire collection for, if that time comes.

Anyway, if you can give potential swappers a quicker, easier overview what you would ask for every coin? That would be a great idea. If you can add a personal value to swappable coins and it counts that, just like the amount of coins added to said swap? That would be an amazing feature! And mandating a quality would be great too, even if some people don't “grade” their coins.

But I usually do a swap that consists of “x coins for x coins” or if I truly think a swap is “out of line”, do I check the value on Numista; even if the prices aren't completely fair, it gives an indication and that's all that they should be in my opinion.

Honestly? There's no conclusive website that gives a good value for coins; I know some coins are more valuable in other parts of the world/more difficult to find, so I guess that's the great thing about swapping here or on any other site; that's for the parties to decide. Hell, I keep getting people who want a lot of Netherlands Antilles from me since those are difficult to find for them. I get them very easily in world coins I buy on Marketplace and the like.

Some people think all of their coins are made of gold, others are very easy because they only swap duplicates; both is fine. Some swaps won't work out, and that's fine too, not everyone has to go through the same door on friendly terms.
