i found this variety a decade or so ago, but noticed it's not mentioned here on Numista..

Type 1 - Used from 1989 to 1991 (There are 2008 coins with type I reverse, but i never have found one)

Type 2 - Used from 1991 to 2011

You can easily see the different between the types.. there are different quantities of seeds in the holes of the Congkak board.

Type 1:

Type 2:

Most of the difference seems to come from die pressure, the 2nd one has more detail because the metal could flow better into the smaller cuts like the seeds. You can see many of them faintly in the first picture and clearly on the 2nd (not saying there couldn't be small differences in dies over decades). But I haven't measured to details on the net if they could be explained the same way.

I'm 100% sure there are 2 different types. 🧐

We will wait till other by year collectors check there coins, and will confirm that it's correct what i mention here above..

Easiest to check the first ‘small’ hole on the right bottom side, it's 3 or 4 seeds..

Only 1991 have the 2 types you can find in the wild.. (and maybe 2008)

Out of the 146 pieces I have, I found three that are minted with the year 1991, and I tend to agree with you on this. As mine are circulated it is hard to tell, as it seems that I may have one each too. I just checked the local catalogue and there is no mention of these two varieties.

This is from your scans - Type 1

Type 2

Is it not just that either some were stamped with more pressure,

or some were stamped with worn dies, and so on. Just asking.

For all who are in doubt of my findings.. 😇

I dare you to find a 10 Sen from 1992 till 2011 with 3 seeds in the first ‘small’ hole on the right bottom side of the Congkak board.

Or an 1989 & 1990 with 4 seeds. 🙃

Here is my comment, clotted die, just have a look, mine is the 3 ½ variant, anyway I find it a good find!

What i think..

It's for now my last post for the upcoming period..

I will spend my spare time searching through coins, and not waste my time on a forum.. 😊

There was a die design change from the reverse mid 1991..

So the coins from 1989 - 1991 have 3 seeds in the first ‘small’ hole on the right bottom side of the Congkak board..

1991 - 2011 have 4 seeds in the first ‘small’ hole on the right bottom side of the Congkak board. ..

Cheers..

I took the time to scan all my 10 sen coins, year by year, and here is the result

It's now really up to you to take the take a decision. I have shown the facts in images, I hope?

Was going through a big pile of Malaysian coins again, and remembered this thread..

Below quote is from a Malaysian collector on another coin forum..

"It's Die Subtypes : Mid-year Design Modification. Type I were used from 1989 to 1991. 1989 was the year Malaysia released their 2nd Series coins. Type II were used from 1991 to 2011. 2011 was the last of Malaysia's 2nd Series coins. However, Type I "re-emerged" on some 2008 10 cents coins. 2008 10 cents Type I and Type II. A Transitional Design Variety."

Look at my coins from each year, please, the 1990 is with 4 and is then a type 2.

I would like to see an image of the type 1 from 2008? Up to now, I'll not change my documentation.

Can anybody explain how a clogged die can influence the direction of the seeds relative to each other?

I think Sander is right and this is a variety.

OK, the 1991 is OK, but the 2008 is not documented at all…

How do you explain the 3.5 pepples?
