This question is related to these coins:

N#3363

I recently obtained an 1872-H dated coin from the N-3363 series and it has coin alignment. It clearly has circulated in the past; I would estimate its condition as VF. The Numista page for this coin series indicates all of these coins should have medal alignment.

There was an earlier question on this page regarding this same series of coins in which the writer stated that he has an 1874 dated coin from this series with coin alignment. It isn't clear to me what the ultimate decision was regarding that question; however, the Numista page for this coin series still only lists medal orientation for these coins.

I have circulated examples of four more coins from this series in my collection (1873, 1874, 1875 and 1876) all of which have medal orientation.

Should a note be added to the Numista page for this coin series indicating that some dates have both orientations? Or, are the medal orientation versions of these coins some kind of contemporary counterfeits? It seems odd that someone would go through the trouble to counterfeit a one cent coin (although one cent coin back then bought much more than a one cent coin does today).

If you look at this Heritage Auction lot, you'll see that it is supposed to be ↑↓. This is because the Heaton Mint issues are usually in coinage orientation.

This same question was asked a few years ago on the forum. It should be pointed out on the catalogue page that both ↑↑ and ↑↓ are possible. At that time I checked Pridmore's catalogue and, quite amazingly, he decided not to record orientation since it's too specialized a piece of information. What?

EDIT — Here is the post I mentioned.

Edit 2 — I just sent a request for modifying the axis information. Unfortunately, the system doesn't allow two different axes — it's one or the other. This should be changed. There are other British colonial issues which were at times contracted out to the Heaton Mint and were struck ↑↓ as usual for Heaton, for example the Bank of Upper Canada bank tokens.
