This question concerns this Numista coin webpage:
The Numista webpage (and the 9th edition of the 1801-1900 SCWC) list three different Madras mint 1862 dated rupees:
Bust A/Rev I (no dots)
30.7 mm Bust A/Rev II (no dots)
Bust B/Rev II (no dots) may have a “v” on left side of bust
The pages from Campbell in the comments section for the Numista webpage for these coins states: "The only rupees attributed to Madras are:
1862 Bust B/Rev II (no dots)
and
1862 Bust B/Rev IIa (no dots)
Campbell does not recognize the two “Bust A” type coins attributed to the Madras Mint in the SCWC and the Numista website page.
I have an 1862 dated rupee that appears to have no mintmark (I looked very carefully at all of the places Campbell indicated indicated a “B” or “C” mintmark might be found at high magnification and did not see any indication of a mintmark). My coin also has no dots and is clearly a “Bust A/Rev I” type which Campbell indicates should not exist. Based upon the entries on the Numista webpage, others appear to have examples of this type of 1862 Madras rupee as well.
Is the Campbell webpage for mintmarks for these coins in error regarding the existence of a Bust A/Rev I (no dots) 1862 dated rupee produced at the Madras Mint?
