My mother in law gave me this book on the 1622 shipwreck of the Atocha.

With it she had a token that had been given to my late father in law that was minted from a silver bar found at the wreck site. I am not really into tokens but this one is very interesting and it is cool to know that this sat under the sand of the Florida Keys from a Spanish shipwreck.
The book has also been pretty good and filled with loads of the historical context that helps one understand the flow of gold, silver, and coins.

I had just finished a book about Cortez and the conquest of Mexico. So this has been great because the wreck was 100 years after Cortez. It’s amazing what the Spanish  accomplished in 100 years!

They had a pacific fleet that traded in China and brought it to Mexico where they portaged it overland to the Caribbean fleet. Then they collected gold form the pacific side where the Inca empire was and  met many other ships all collecting in Havana Cuba. Leaving Cuba late was  the disaster that led into a hurricane!

Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Looking for pre 1783 coins

I couldn’t find anything about this on google. The only one I could find online was a different variety on eBay.

Interesting, and this is one of the most famous shipwrecks out there.

EDIT — I believe Sedgwick had a number of auctions of items from the Atocha (gold bars, coins, etc.).
