Content:

I would like to share a family heirloom from my collection—a Late Qing Dynasty official‘s hat ornament set with a natural pink tourmaline.

General Description
The stone is translucent, with a soft, even, warm luster. After more than a century of continuous family ownership, it has survived without any artificial damage. It has been authenticated as natural tourmaline by an authoritative Chinese gemological institution.

Historical Background
In the Qing official dress code, the material of the hat finial directly indicated the wearer’s rank. By the Late Qing period, depletion of natural deposits forced the court to sanction alternative materials. The use of pink tourmaline illustrates the growing material strains of the Late Qing state.

Why I Am Sharing This
I am posting this piece to exchange knowledge with fellow members who study Chinese accessories and rank insignia, and as supplementary material evidence of the material constraints that the Qing central government faced during its final decade.

Important Remarks
Photographs of this ornament are available but not included in this public forum post due to ongoing academic review. If you wish to discuss, please contact me via private message.

Thank you for reading.
