"Coin at random" that tickles your fancy

I just thought it would be a good way for people to share nice coins they saw on the "coin at random" section.  A lot that have been posted I'd never seen before and probably wouldn't have known about until someone posted them here.  It's certainly made my want list a lot longer and less attainable  ;)
Here's yet another to add to the wish list, Danish West Indies 1848 20 Skilling

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces29635.html
I'll put that on my wish list too  ;)
Gah! I had one but lost it!
You had something to post about, but now you don't, so you're posting about having nothing to post instead? :~
I don't usually like modern coins but this one is very nice

Sorry... I saw other people doing it and figured, well, if they can so can I. But maybe I should be describing them more, because some are very VERY interesting!

My last link was a REALLY old Indian coin... somewhere around the 200s or 300s BC I believe...

These ancient Indian coins certainly are fascinating (and there seem to be a lot of them!). I love the metal this one is made out of, and the square shape of it.

This coin has a very intriguing value... 1 Denier = 4/13 Pfennig = 1/13 Mattier  !!!! Who ever heard of something that has a value as a division of 13??

Also, I surprised myself by actually liking the way this coin looks, although really it's very plain.

Also also, not one person on Numista actually has this coin!

I don't mean to be posting so soon after my last one, but I accidentally closed the main window and reopened it and found THIS gem. The Star of David on a coin with a hole in it!! I literally said "Ahhh!" out loud. In awe. (Yes, haha, I'm SO funny.)

Really neat "Indian princely states" coin... a 1 Piasa from the later 1800s. I just can't help loving the shape of it (even if I have no idea what the obverse says, and even if the reverse is just about pictureless).

Ancient Rome... need I say anything more? But seriously, I LOVE the obverse's curly-haired guy, though the right-manly chap on the reverse is a bit too spread-eagled, I think...

All the Vatican coins have such funny reverse pictures. (A cloud which becomes a sheep next to a strange-looking man...)

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces12152.html
A six year Numista absence makes the heart grow fonder... ?
Probably scenes from the bible.  The cloud becoming a sheep probably refers to God testing Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his son Isaac, then providing a sheep as a replacement sacrifice.

I have to ask... what is billon? I've seen that metal listed on coins before, but I have NO idea what it means.
A six year Numista absence makes the heart grow fonder... ?
It means it has silver content but more copper than silver. I think it is for below .100?
Billon is a silver alloy.  I think it's usually 40% silver, so the US war nickels can be described as being billon
/! what he said...
Citação: neilithicBillon is a silver alloy.  I think it's usually 40% silver, so the US war nickels can be described as being billon
So that's why the 50% silver Canadian dimes aren't listed as billon?
A six year Numista absence makes the heart grow fonder... ?
To my knowledge a billon coin is a coin with a silver conent of .010 to .300 of silver. Sorry you were right a quick search on google shows everything under .500 is billon

The thing that annoys me is that it's not listed consistantly.  The 1850 Switzerland Rappens are listed as Billon and I think they were 40% silver, however the 1950s and 1960s Mexican Pesos are listed as "Silver 0.100 (10%)"  They should either list everything under 50% silver as billon or list the actual silver percentages on all coins
Billon is used for older coins, I think. It would be just like describing those impure gold Isle of Man coins as electrum!

Citação: nosouvenirsI always wonder why a "country" doesn't have circulated pieces.
Usually it's because they're a dependency and it's cheaper to use the currency from the country that runs them, like Niue, Nauru, Cook Islands (although the Cooks do have some of their own coins that circulate alongside the New Zealand currency)  The only coins the produce are the overpriced commemoratives made as a money spinner.
Old gold Japanese coin.  A real beauty.  What amazes me is that it only has a Numista rarity rating of 84 so that means a fair few of us own one (unfortunately me not included).

God I love the design of the UK pence. I know many will disagree, but it's by far one of the most eccentric/futuristic designs I have ever seen. I also love the 5 pesetas (https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces1262.html) which I believe was the first coin to step out of the "classical" design boundaries.
