HI

Isn't it possible that it could be  Tai Ping Tian Guo / Sheng Bao coin. 1 cash from Taiping rebellion in China 1860 -62

Catalogue number Hartill 23.10 / FD 2669/ S1605

The reverse Sheng bao is difficult to read and I'm in doubt there - maybe

Niclas
Looks like not so common rebel coin

Thanks - I googled your suggestion and came up with the following link

They aren't the same characters, the one you found says 聖寶, which literally means 'saint money' in Japanese... can't read Roy's though.

Hi Kenny
The characters on the reverse of my coin are identical to those in the following web link (as you indicate the second character is not 寶) Is it possible to find the 2nd character shown on the web link?

As kenny said, this is not Korean coin.

Hi Roy, I don't think I was clear. The link to the British Museum shows the characters "聖寶" but your coin does not. The characters are too blurry (and I don't know enough Chinese) to read the characters. I'm sure someone else might be able to read them, but I can guarantee they aren't the same coin.

Thanks for you patience with me on this one.

I have tried to get an improved photo and reproduce the coin the same way up as the Museum image.

Hopefully this will help in identifying the lower of the two characters. To me having the advantage of being able to see the actual coin, the two characters do look the same, but I have no command of Chinese at all!!!

Roy

It look the same after you upside-down the picture of reverse side to medal alignment.

聖寶 - Saint Bao
Bao - The Qing Dynasty coins be known as Bao
so 聖寶 means holy money
Congratulations anyway! I dream to hold one day the rebel coins

I always looked for them

So jealous. The vertical Shengbao is much rarer than my horizontal one.

Could you post a copy of your horizontal one because I don't know the difference

Thanks
Roy
Thanks
It is a lovely coin and I now know the difference between vertical and horizontal.
