My girlfriend ( ) and I have a thing for elephants (another long story) and I just thought of a very nice gift for her. I'd like to start a collection of coins that have elephants on them. I was wondering how I could start an entire collection from square one and I just thought of you, the very nice numista users who have helped me in some other situations
So I'd like some help starting a new collection about elephants. Could anyone help me?

Whish I had even a replica as it is quite strange design. Was close to becoming our silver bullion coinage.
Wow, that's just bizarre. The miner design is very nice (good to acknowledge the people who are responsible for all bullion products!) and it would be cool if it had ever been produced, but the elephant... surely they could have just chosen an eagle or a jaguar or something?
For cheaper ones you might want to look at Liberian 1 and 2 Cents coins from the 1930´s to 1980`s
Other ones I find nice but a bit more pricey are the Rixdollar and Stiver coins from Ceylonor more modern the Silver Bullion Elephant coins from Gabun. Also nice are antique Roman, Greek... coins with elephants on them

Nalaberong.
Maybe the engraver was recently impressed by the elephant. It is an Asian one, so maybe he went to India, as most elephants in Zoos in America would be Africans at that time.
It is very rare that even paterns don't have the eagle on them. But in fact our first Silver bullion coin didn't had it. But instead of recognizing the miners they recognized the coin press and a scale as that is what clearly is important to them in the priduction chain.

What a cool idea.
I just searched for coins with elephants here on numista's advanced search and there are 137 circulating coins listed and 195 together with no circulating issues.

Told'ya it was too tempting, be careful as it is easy to go over 100$ by selection cheap sets as you will usually end up with over 10 sets for the combined shipping
Here goes again if anyone wants a lot of country sets (and spend your allowances):

By the way, it is interesting how I found that guy on eBay. Since I joined Numista I always tried getting the Somaliland Zodiac set, as it is among the "easy" ones to get, I mean they are circulation coins and not silver. But every time I tried getting them from users, they would either reject NGC valuation as it was too low according to them because "the set is complete and hence has to be worth at least x2 what NGC says". So I was basically offering 12$ worth of coins for UNC sets or 18$ for BU ones (NGC valuation). But most users wanted 30 for the 12 coins. It was a downer as I was new and thought maybe the users where either harsh or maybe I was insulting them with the valuations, so I gave up.
Until recently (a month or so ago) when I was digging at eBay for cheap auctions and coins I saw a nice set of coins for another country so I opened it and saw the price was quite nice with respect to the quality, so I clicked in the user id and voilá found him, not long after I saw the zodiac set UNC-BU for 5 dollars! So it wasn't a brainer, and registered shipping was only 3$, but even then I bought some other sets for the combined shipping
