Anyone know what these are supposed to be? They were pictured in the TV show "Hell on Wheels" as dollars in the western U.S. in something like 1875. I searched a bit but couldn't find anything that looks quite like them. They kind of look Spanish, but I can't find anything matching among the old spanish 8R.
I think you've got it! Thanks. I thought it was familiar, but I didn't search before 1800. Strange choice for coins supposedly being used in 1870's Utah :-)

Three of my uncles worked in the wonderful world of TV. One was working on a series about the history of New-France (which came to an end in 1760/63) and borrowed Canadian Centennial medals (1967!!) from my mother to use as coins on the set. As long as it looks like a coin, more or less of the right color and size, it's good enough for them. Cinema is much more careful about these things usually.
Do you know the old version of the series "Mission: Impossible"? One of the episodes was about a stamp collector and at some point they showed him holding a stamp supposedly of great value. What they actually showed was an ugly regular issue of communist Hungary ─ about the cheapest and ugliest stamp imaginable.
The last time I watched Mary Poppins, I was pleased to notice that they managed to obtain a couple of period-correct Edward VII pennies for the famous "tuppence". (Although, they did look quite worn for what would have been quite new coins in 1910!)
