The China Doll Dodge City-a funny token...

Hi, I just wanted to show you a token I found this afternoon. At first, I thought it was a token issued by some tourist place, assuming the China Doll was a collection of China dolls... Only to discover it was a brothel token ! Mine has only one side that is struck, some are known to have something on the other side as well (3 $ all night). Some were issued in San Francisco.



Does any of you have a token like this ? Or any other brothel tokens ?

What a find! Do you have any idea of what year it's from? Those prices are pretty steep.
I've never had a brothel token but they're pretty fascinating. I'm always amazed at how little effort was put into subtlety on some, and how much effort was put into others.

I have to ask...what did you think a "dooie" was in relation to a doll collection?

My native language is not English, so I didn't think much of those words, even if I'm bilingual now. I don't know what year it is, unfortunately.

The Token Catalog says it's a fantasy token. Anyway, I love the chinese characters and the incuse legends, that's why I bought it. If I had known it was a brothel token right away, maybe I wouldn't have bought it. I am not too keen on those things

​Let me first say "My Brothel Token" means I own the token. I didn't open the BROTHEL or hire women or cash the token in.

Like other tokens and coins a lot of history is behind them. Civil War token that I own. And German Coins that have a swastika on them I own. Those were ugly times in history but it doesn't mean that it should be hidden because you're too sensitive.

Also, quick history lesson. Most brothels that were in the mid-west of America were owned by women.

Yep, I see nothing wrong with these tokens being on Numista or being discussed as long as its kept sensible.

I don't collect Nazi memorabilia or coinage but I respect those who do. I do collect some Spanish new world coinage, and we all know how abhorrent their actions were.

There were a large variety of brass brothel tokens, with incuse lettering, that hit the market in the 1960s. Those were fantasy tokens, and have little value.

There are some real brothel tokens, but they are quite scarce. (There are also a number of brothel tokens from France, issued around the 1920.)

There were so many NCLTs, fantasy coins and tokens hitting the market in the 1960s that one collector issued a series from Purple Shaftieuland in 1970 as a parody, with denominations such Nudge, Twist and Shaft. They were very popular at the time!!

Looks like a fantasy and a racist one at that. Lookie and feelie sound very derivative of making fun of Chinese people who don't speak English well or with a stereotypical Chinese accent. Whats next a silver one saying "Me love you long time".

I am a woman myself, and I didn't even know it was a "fantasy brothel token" when I bought it. I loved the chinese characters and the incuse lettering, that's why I took it with me. I'll only consider it for those aspects.

I likewise don't find it degrading, and I never considered it racist.

I think it's an interesting find, it's great that this hobby can bring in such a variety of people and opinions. I think it gives us a great opportunity to expand and explore different points of view.

According to Meggan Connors "Prostitution in the Old West", in the Barbary Coast of California, white women commanded higher prices than Mexican or Asian women; and Native American and redheads commanded higher prices than other white women; but the average price ranged from 25 cents to 1 dollar.

Another source, addressing the London of Jack the Ripper, indicated that the prostitutes there performed their services for what they needed--the cost of a room (4 pence), or maybe only the cost of a drink (3 pence). American prostitutes were deemed to have been much more expensive--some earned $30/month.

In some cases in the Old West, the local prostitute was the ONLY woman in town, so could even be a respected citizen.

The French brothel tokens I have seen are called "clamshell tokens" (thin metal front and back, hollow center) that generally imitate French 20 franc gold coins (equivalent to about $5).

I have found a The China Doll, Dodge City, Lookie, Feelie, Dooie, brothel token in my late husband's things. He did 4 tours in Vietnam in the mid to late 60's. The back is blank.

Does anyone know what these are worth today??
