German Thaler 1531 from Charles(Karl) V's Holy Roman Empire

4 publicações

Hello from Norway!
I have in my possession a coin clearly dated 1531, and it is also clear who the emperor ids in this last remnants of the Roman Empire. I am not able to find a simalar coin on net, and I cannot confirm which state or city it came from. Onone side it says "WOLF..." , which made me think of Wolfbüttel, but I don't know.
The coin is silver , about 40 mm diameter and weight is close to 32 grams, which is a lot for a single Thaler(normally ca 28 grams?).
I would be very gratefull if someone with the right knowledge would take some tine to study the pictures and give me some advice on this issue. Thank you!
If it is easier for you, please answer in German, I have quite a good understanding of your language! Best regrds from ejs
Welcome to Numista!
That's a very nice thaler you have there.

"WOLF" here seems to be part of the name of Karl Wolfgang, and based on that, I found this thaler, which seems to be the closest we have in the catalogue to your coin (there is no 1531 date listed there, however):

The name of the Holy Roman Emperor (Charles/Karl V) is on the side with the imperial eagle.

Also, is it just me or do some of the letters around "KARLWOLF" seem to have been struck twice?
Thank you for your answer! I cannot really see that the letters have been double struck, and the year of 31 is pretty clear. Also, about the weight : it shous pretty close to 32 grams, which is a bit heavy for a Thaler. Is there anywere issued coins of slightly higher denomination? Like 1 1/12 or 1 1/8 if a "standard"Thaler? Or coul it be a fake? Best regards from ejs

Charles ever lasting roman emperor

It looks good, you should try the silver tests.

Does it look plated to you, or is it corrosion ON the flan?
That makes me think of fake
Some letters look like double strike, but it is not.
When a die gets old and well used, the are 'recut' to refresh them.
I think this is the case here and that gives me the NOT FAKE feeling

Fake or not, it is a nice coin
