Hi,

look at this:
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces3505.html

5 New Dollars? BS (a bad word in shorthand), to say it nicely:8D

The denominations for Taiwan are as follows:
Chiao (1/100 of a Yuan)
Yuan

They do NOT have cents, neither dollars and even less new dollars......

Please correct that as soon as possible!

In China (Peoples Republic) they have Fen as the lowest unit, then the Jiao (Chiao) and of course the Yuan as well, but NO Dollar neither!

Thanks in advance
Ole

I agree, did the referee change it recently?

To be clear, I support naming the Taiwan currency "New Taiwan Dollar", but I believe the coin pages' titles and the face value field should use "Yuan"; e.g. we have the name "Renmenbi" for the PRC's currency, but all those pages there are titled "Yuan" too.
I'm with Ole on this. Accuracy is vital especially when so many coin pages refer to Numista.

Let the central bank decide how it calls its currency in English.

"The New Taiwan dollar (NT$), issued by the Central Bank, is the national currency of Taiwan."

I thought this was all agreed upon here: https://en.numista.com/forum/topic77401.html?

If Yuan and Dollar are the same, I do not see a problem calling these coins Dollars--especially if the currency is revolving around the dollar. :`

And on a side note, I do not think the People's Republic of China is a good comparison. They have a different currency than Taiwan, even if the names are similar. Take a look at their Wiki links, for example:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Taiwan_dollar
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renminbi

Notice how the New Taiwan Dollar is never referred to as a Yuan, and that the Renminbi never refers to the word Dollar? Well, kind of--the word "Dollar" is used, but it seems to only be used when referring to foreign Dollar-based currencies. ;)

And with all that being said, the only anomaly I see is of the "Jiao" coins. Should those not instead be called "Dimes"?

Hi Ole, and thank you for your kind words. You are, though, very late in the game. As Sulfur mentioned, I asked if there were any objections about this, but since there were none I made the decission so change to its official name. You had your chance, but didn't take it.

History
The official name of the currency of Taiwan is New Taiwan Dollar (NTD/NT$), and replaced the (Old) Taiwan Dollar (TW$) in 1949, which replaced the Taiwanese Yen in 1946, which replaced the Japanese Yen in 1895. The Chinese Yuan has never circulated on the island.
