Nonuniformities in KM numbers

4 publicações
Hi all,

I came across some nonuniformities in the KM numbers when adding new coins to my collection.
I noticed that sometimes a coin that slightly differs from a previous issue gets a different KM number but sometimes it doesn't.
My specific example is the 1 Piso coin from the Philippines and the 200 Forint from Hungary.

200 Forint:
This coin exists in two types that differ in the lettering:
MAGYAR KÖZTÁRSASÁG and MAGYARORSZÁG
Consequently, these coins are listed under KM#826 and KM#852

1 Piso:
Similar thing. Two different letterings:
REPUBLIKA NG PILIPINAS and ISANG BANSA ISANG DIWA
However, they are both listed under KM#209 (while Schön has listed them as two different issues).

I believe this is not the only example. Does anyone know where this inconsistent numbering arises from?
Wouldn't it be nice to have it consistent in numista?

Thanks

KM does have 2 numbers as I would consider them for the Philippines coin you mention (KM# 209.1 and KM# 209.2). They make decisions on whether to use completely different whole numbers or just slightly altered ones (extended by decimal places) based on how great the differences are and some collectors may agree and some disagree.

KM does what it wants, but i could be nice if Numista has a consistent rule about linking coin pages and KM numbers.
Indeed, in some case a coin page includes several KM numbers, in other KM numbers with slight differences are different coin pages.

As a design principle, I wis Numista would keep coins on as few different coin pages as possible. Spreading coins onto more pages increases bandwidth, more user clicking and page loads, and less effective searches. Novice users try to find a coin and aren't sure which "fork in the road" to take.
