6th Portrait of Queen Elizabeth

Is the 6th Portrait of Queen Elizabeth which Australia is using on a 2019 50 cents set to be the new portrait to be used on all Commonwealth coins? Or is this just a one time thing for this set. I think the new portrait to be a very fine likeness of Her Majesty. I like it!

I think it's just a one off, or at least just an Australian thing. Can't really imagine it being used in the UK, expecially since the 5th portrait just came out a few years ago on British coins.

That is the one.

It is the same as the UK Fifth portrait by Jody Clark. Except in a slight variation it also shows the shoulders of the Queen.

In Australia it is known as the Sixth portrait because we had a "one off" portrait on a commemorative 50 cent coin in the year 2000 that was done by Vladimir Gottwald.

1953 UK 1st portrait was done by Mary Gillick
1953 Australian 1st portrait was done by Mary Gillick.

1966 Australian Second Portrait was done by Arnold Machin. (The poms lagged behind us on this one.)
1969 UK Second portrait was done by Arnold Machin.

1985 UK Third Portrait was done by Ralph Makleouf.
1985 Australian Third portrait was done by Ralph Makleouf.

1998 UK Fourth portrait was done by Ian Rank-Broadley.
1998 Australia Fourth portrait was done by Ian Rank-Broadley.

2000 Australian Fifth portrait was done by Vladimir Gottwald (One coin only)
Then Australia went back to using the Fourth IRB portrait until 2019.

2015 UK Fifth portrait was done by Jody Clark.

2019 Australia Sixth portrait by Jody Clark (Slight variation of the UK 5th portrait).

Also The Royal Australian Mint has just released a set of Five 12 Sided 50 cent coins that have all five different portraits used on them since 1969 but they are all dated 2019. The Gottwald one is included in the set but this time it is on a standard 50 cent coin instead of the Commemorative one mentioned above.

As of 2020 all coins issued by the Royal Australian Mint (& Bullion coins byThe Perth Mint) will only have the Jody Clark 6th Portrait.

In 2019 both the IRB & JC portraits were used on various coins. In some cases the same coin had two different obverses .. Here is an example ....

The portrait by Jody Clark with the shoulders has been made for use on the coins of the Crown dependencies, British Overseas Territories and countries of the Commonwealth.

The crown dependencies, British Overseas Territories and countries of the Commonwealth themselves decide if they want to use the Jody Clark portrait on their coins. They can for example decide to never introduce it on their coins, or they can in 5 years from now decide to start using it.

The Jody Clark portrait without the shoulders is for exclusive use on coins of the United Kingdom.

I think you mean 4th & 6th Portraits. The 5th Portrait on Australian coins was reserved for a 50 cent circulating commemorative issued in 2000 and a couple of NCLT issues. This was the coin with the 5th Portrait.

This portrait has only been used by the Isle of Man as well as Australia so far.

I don't think it will be used on New Zealand coins - &, frankly, I think it is pretty ugly.

Ian Rank-Broadley's obverse design had been used since 1998 in both Australia & the U.K., & since 1999 in New Zealand - & that portrait is pretty regal & captures what the Queen looks like now at the ripe age of 94.

Seems New Zealand is continuing to use the IRB 4th Portrait on its coins. I wonder if they will ever change it or just keep using it until Queen Elizabeth pops her clogs and Prince Charles gets to be King?

I have seen an example of the New Zealand 2020 20 Cents.

It still has Ian Rank-Broadley's obverse portrait design.
