Also, as a gift, I received two silver coins, both from the same country, both dated 1952 and are as far as I can see, the only silver coins produced for circulation by this country, using this information, would it be possible to determine what country they are from?
Was able to get two Moroccan 1/2 Dirhams from 1299 (1882) and 1317 (1900) for a ridiculously cheap price: €3 and €4 respectively; also saw many, many cheap prices in the Madrid numismatic shops today. Can't wait to get out to see more!
Seriously, there are awesome prices. I'm going back soon to pick up a €40 5 Francs Louis XVIII, and got a 100 Francs Martinique banknote for the same price.
I bought an 1840 dime and 1853-O half, and a friend found a 1944-D wartime nickel he gave me, and I didn't have that one in my collection. At first I was concerned the half dollar was fake since there's no drapery under the elbow, but after some research it turns out that it's pretty common for the dies at the end of their lifetime to not show it
Purchased a SYRIA Syrie 1 Piastre WWII Emergency issue coin in a bargain bin today for 50 cent and a Imperial Pool Room / Glover & Leveson Token Good for 2 1/2 ¢, that might be rare.
I found this one for such a great price I couldn't resist, more than I wanted to spend on coins right now but I could probably double my money if I wanted to sell it (which I don't). Someone online selling off some of their collection since they're moving out of the country, I was looking for something else and it showed up in the "see also" list, he'd just posted it. Looks even better in person, the lighting magnifies every tiny scratch. Has a nice luster to it as well, not the black dirty I'm used to on old silver.
I also got a 1858 flying eagle cent from the same seller since I was already paying shipping, but it's fairly well worn and nothing remarkable, I just didn't have one yet.
I already told you in the previous edition of this thread. I think it was my mistake. It is rare only in this country, in other words, that coin is dead fro circulation.

I can understand it. it is quite common for small countries. For example, here, in Georgia, impossible to get UNC 50 tetri 1993 coin. YOu must to buy it on Ebay or somwhere else :)

1824 W France Louis XVIII 5 Francs, very good price at €35
Old French language newspaper from January 1938 about contemporary geopolitics with articles about Italy's withdrawal from the League of Nations, and about Soviet diplomatic activity.
I like Spanish 5 pesetas very much. They are not too expensive, there are few nice types and collection looks uniform.
I'm trying to get a type set of all Spanish silver and bronze types from between 1869 and 1937; and I can say the Spanish type collection isn't very consistent (for example there is no 2 peseta coin for the 3rd head of Alfonso XIII, and there is only a 50 Centimos coin for the 5th head of Alfonso XIII (1910)). Very confusing and frustrating when you learn you spent all day asking for a coin that doesn't exist.

My photos are quite large in their size ( MB) , but too small in posts. How make them larger?
thanks
To make the photos of your coins look larger, you must photograph the coin as close as close as possible so that it fits the space or at least look larger and selecting and increasing. Hope that helps.

Maybe I must choose another format of image ( not JPEG ? )
Your pic is small in your post, I don't exactly know why but since we can just click on it to make it big it's not a problem to me. Nice and interesting coin that you just posted, by the way.

Did you notice the die clash in the ear area? There was a long discussion on the French forum, for which I was at first very skeptical. I'm still not sure how it is possible unless the reverse die was somewhat convex.
@Camerinvs I didn't at first, but after reading the thread you linked it became kinda apparent.
As a type collector, I'm kind of oblivious to die faults in my coins!

Note that photos are small in posts, but after you click them they are enlarged. Then again you can click right mouse button on that enlarged version and choose the option "open in new tab/new window" from the popup menu. Sometimes you can see much larger picture in this way.

Dato, in a previous post you said your pictures are scanned. What's the resolution when you are scanning? I think most scanners have a default setting of 300 dpi. It's quicker but the pictures are smaller. I always use 600 dpi for scanning coins, even 1200 dpi when I want to show a detail of a coin, but then the speed is too slow to use it as default setting.

For beautiful coins, and for my own collection catalog I always use 1200, and choose Tif. its too slowly, but great resolution.
When you post a picture that is square you will get the biggest mini image .... maybe the length of a picture is the main parameter for numista hence a long picture will not be very high.
When I scan in 1200 dpi, it is very blurry, even more than 300 dpi. This has happened with two different $200 all-in-one printers. Am I doing something wrong?

Can you provide a picture of what you mean by "printer"? (E.g. by googling the brand in Google Images.)
I use my iPad Air which makes great photos. I sometimes even see details that I missed with a magnifier.

Ah ─ that's why! I don't think there is any hope you'll ever produce good photos of any small objects with that, even with sophisticated setting options. You would be much better with a phone, tablet, or even a traditional camera.
Citação: "alfonz"How to see that its a maundy one?
All British coins minted like those are 'Maundy' coins, minted specially for a ceremony since the reign of Charles II. The 3 pence coins are more common; some circulated, and are generally more available than the other denominations.
There's also a 1 1/2 penny coin from the mid 19th century that looks like a Maundy coin but isn't.
I've been trying to get one of each major design of circulated non-gold US currency (a few still in the mail that I will probably picture here as they arrive, and then 13? types left), probably should change my goal to 1805-10 or newer, since I'm not rich enough for the 1790's types.
Today the post office said the 1821 capped bust dime I bought arrived, and the 1834 capped bust quarter was still 5 days out. But I got the quarter today, and there's no dime, so I'm confused... quite rural here so no local coin shops, anything older than modern circulating I have to find online and roll the dice on what I actually get
To keep my price range (quarters are much rarer and more expensive than the half dollars like the previous 1830 half I posted in this thread, just fyi if you're not familiar with the capped bust series) I had to pick between a hole, or so worn you couldn't see details. I chose condition over holed. And it doesn't add anything to the value, but the rotation of the dies is about 20 degrees off the correct 180, easy to see from the position of the hole. Ignoring the hole it's good condition for my collection, and since I'm not collecting for resale value but for my own satisfaction, this example makes me happy :) I believe it's the "O over F" reverse variety
Show us pictures of your's, although not the pizza because that'll make me hungry! And how do you get coins at the same place you get pizza? I sometime trade coins for beer at my local bar, but not at little ceasers...
I will post the pictures after I get the president examination thing.
The shop owners know about nothing about arabic, chinese or korean coins. These are the first ones I check because sometimes I can find rare ones.
got the 1821 capped bust dime today, it's nice looking! And one of the fun larger size coins than a modern dime. I have the half dime on order but it's coming back home to the USA from Germany, so it's going to take a while
I bought this "ugly" (and blurry :s) lot today : about 140 coins for 280 USD...
Coins too damaged to be identify : 20% (plus one button from Mallorca)
1951-1980 : 3 coins
1901-1950 : 3 coins
1801-1901 : 2 coins
1701-1800 : about 15% of the lot
1601-1700 : about 35% of the lot
Feodal and royal : about 15% of the lot
Roman nummus : 5 coins
Other (celt ?) : 3-4 coins
10 silver coins, the rest in cooper/bronze.
The price may seem expensive, but some coins are really scarce and well preserved (they are just a bit moody...)
That's an odd lot, roman era through 1980, all dirty? Somebody buried a random assortment of coins in their backyard 40 years ago? I'd love to see a closer picture of especially the celtic ones once they're cleaned
Not coins, but stamps this time. Cost 80c 1901 stamps: 2 and 20 penniä, grand duchy of Finland. Then some card things, I do not know what they are. But I would say it was a good deal.
Blue 1901 20Penniä: 102 pcs.
Orange 1901 2Penniä: 23pcs.
+ 15 card things. All stamps are used.

If I'm not wrong, the Capped bust series' quarter is really elusive (at least for me); I've been able to get my hands on the 5 cents, 10 cents and 50 cents, but no quarter yet.

You're not wrong, the entire mintage of quarters for all years combined is 5.5 million, compared to 91 million for the half dollar

Mongke silver dirhem. Tiflis.
And finally I studied how to post large images !!! wooow !!! Thanks to my Numista friend Vitautas !!!!
? what is that coin, and what year? What's Mongke dirhem tiflis? Sounds like some kind of terrible bacterial infection.

I love getting lots like this! Identifying old coins is my favorite part of the hobby, have fun!
I collect and deal in ancient Roman coin. In case you're looking for affordable ancient coins or need any help with the coins you already have send me a message.
First a triple altin from the Ottoman empire AH1143. It was most likely pierced and later plugged, and it looks a lot better than most other plug jobs of its type.
Second is a 1/8 ducat from Nürnberg minted in 1700.
This coin was the first of its type to appear at a US auction house in more than three years when it showed up in a CNG auction a few months ago. At the time I didn't have the money to get it so I had to let it go. Surprisingly, it came up again at Heritage where I was able to snag it for almost $80 less than when it sold at CNG. No doubt that whoever bought it wanted to resell it to a wider audience, a plan that backfired terribly.
AH 1143, you say?
1143 X 0.03 (i.e. 3%) = 34.29 → closest round number is 34
1143 ─ 34 = 1109
1109 + 622 = 1731 CE
They used the name Islambul instead of the more common Qustantiniyya on coins for Istambul. Not yet in the catalogue; I hope you'll add it. Very nice. I like the "minimalist" approach...
My last acquisition for probably the next few months. A few coins described as Transylvania and Hungary, but the 1/4 ducat in the lot is the entire reason I bought it.

I didn't know there was a mathematical formula for that, I normally take out a book and find the corresponding date on a chart.
Yeah I didn't put down the mint because it was all the same city, but I wasn't sure on what name they were using at the time.
Got San Marino 5 Centesimi 1864, 2 1/2 Centimes 1854 from Luxembourg and Montenegro 1 and 2 Perpera, alongside Liegnitz-Brieg 3 Kreuzer. Did not made photos before they went into holders sadly.

Mongke was a Khan of the Mongol Empire which conquered vast areas of Central Asia and parts of Russia and the Caucaus, including Georgia. Tiflis is a city in Georgia and hence this is a coin that was struck during the occupation of Georgia by the Mongols and a dirhem is the monetary name for the coin, similar to a dollar...

That coin is very beautiful. Even in those days they had good artists.
No coins this week for me, but I did get lost and ended up in a neighbourhood with a flea market; bought some modern-era coin types I didn't have for 5 euros.
4.50€ got me:
7 with 1€: Old post cards. 5 over 100 year olds (one from paris and one from sweden, other 3 from Finland) others from the early 20s.
A lot of stamps from the early 19th century grand duchy of Finland, mostly 20p and 1MK stamps. 80c
2.5€: All knowing book from the grand duchy of Finland 1909. Laws, how to write different kinds of letters, geometry and math, multiply chart, rate of exchanges, accounting and interest rates for 1 markka. And much more.
A couple more 1800's silvers, 1878 Trade Dollar from a numista member (Thank you Steve27, it's exactly what I was looking for!!!!!) and an 1876 seated liberty quarter that I wanted to kinda finish off my seated liberty collection (I know, there's still quite a few more obverse/reverse combinations but I'm satisfied enough). The quarter shipped from Russia and took 23 days to get here, not sure how the coin got all the way over there to begin with, but it's back home in the USA now.
I love how the trade dollar reverse eagle was also used on only the 20¢ as well, if you want to see side by side comparison of those I can take a picture.
And I want to brag about my seated liberty collection now... Also have an extremely damaged 1854 quarter, but not worth showing
